Polly Peachum - Alix Cartwright
Tiger Brown - Bradley Bishop
Lucy Brown - Lauren Kneteman
Jenny - Erika Conway
Filch - David Johnston

The Production Team is rounded out with Kat Evans - Set and Costume Designer, Richard Hatfield - Lighting Designer, Doug Verdin - Master Builder, Geri Dittrich - Master Costumer, Kelsey Wangler - Choreographer, Joan Hawkins - Master Painter and Crystal Oleksyn - Stage Manager. Spotlight on George Millar - Set Designer of Much Ado About Nothing

What is your role on this Production? Set Designer

Is this your first Shakespearean production? I did a great set for The Tempest in Ireland (1967) [How I'd love to do it here!]

What is it that drew you to this production? Much Ado About Nothing is a gem of gossip mongering. Two infatuated lovers fail to exchange vows. Two sparring opponents 'use their hands against their hearts.' Absolutely brilliant! Who could doubt the plume that writ it?

What is your favorite thing about being involved in this current production? What greater joy than seeing 20 actors use a 'dreamed space' so brilliantly. I adored every one of the cast in this production.

Spotlight on Gabby Bernard - Margaret in Much Ado About Nothing

1. What is your role in this production? I play Margaret, one of Hero's gentlewomen and, as fondly termed by our costume designer Ephram, 'the skanky maid'.
2. Is this your first Shakespearean production? This is my first Shakespeare production and I'm loving every minute!
3. What is it that drew you to this production? I spent my summer scrounging for auditions, and when I came across the notice for Much Ado About Nothing I was a little hesitant... a), I'd never even attempted Shakespeare before, and b)high school English class had pretty much ruined classic literature for me. But as soon as I picked up a copy of the play to research the show a bit more, I fell in love with it! I could see so much potential for character work and fun stage work, and just the idea of working on something so rich with possibilities for a theater like Walterdale really excited me. I booked an audition right away, and here I am!
4. What is your favourite thing about the role you play in this current production? I love the challenge this role has offered me - Margaret's personality is so polar-opposite of my own and I've had to really push myself to fit into her shoes! Of course the chance to work with so many talented artists and actors has been such an incredible learning experience, as well as an absolute delight. The enthusiasm and positive energy has been so inspiring. Oh, and I guess it's pretty fun to be so saucy and inappropriate on stage, too.

Spotlight on Anne Marie Szucs - Director of Much Ado About Nothing

1. What is your role in this production? Director
2. Is this your first Shakespearean production? No, but all others were acting experiences: Keyano Theatre - Romeo and Juliet (twice) - once as Lady Montague and once as Lady Capulet; Keyano - Comedy of Errors (Abbess/Emilia); Horizon Players - A Midsummer Night's Dream (Titania) and Hamlet (Gertrude); Seacoast Studios (West Vancouver) - Love and Drollery; Love and Dreaming (both collages of scene work from Shakespearean plays)
3. What is it that drew you to this production? I was ready to direct one of three shows voted on by donors - I had no idea what would be picked; I was secretly rooting for Much Ado, though, as I really wanted to sink my teeth into directing a Shakespearean play
4. What is your favourite thing about this current production? The chance to work with an amazingly talented cast and crew!

Spotlight on Patrick Errington - Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing

1. What is your role in this production? Claudio
2. Is this your first Shakespearean production? Yes this is my first complete Shakespeare production, though my BA English major at the U of A has been focused largely on play texts of the Elizabethan/Jacobean era.
3. What is it that drew you to this production? I have a significant interest in Shakespeare's plays (and I better, as I have devoted significant time to the study of such texts from a literary standpoint at the U of A). I am also hoping to focus my acting career toward Shakespeare's plays, and this seemed like a fantastic place to start combining my past literary experience with my love for the stage.
4. Favourite thing? There are way too many for me to say!

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Spotlight on Murray Cullen - Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing

1. What is your role in this production? Benedick
2. Is this your first Shakespearean production? I believe it is my 4th.... Lord Capulet in R&J, Dromo of Syracuse in Comedy of Errors, and Hamlet in ....that play ... about that guy....Benedick is a bit like Dromo and Hamlet smooshed together.
3. What is it that drew you to this production? A chance to play Benedick, he is one of those Shakespearean characters that you just can't say no to.
4. What is your favourite thing about the role you play? Benedick and I share many.... "qualities".... I enjoy letting him out to play. It seems to me that Love is one of the leading causes of fear, anger, pain and sorrow.... and as with all horrible things, it's hilarious when they happen to other people.

Spotlight on Leah Paterson - Hero in Much Ado About Nothing

1. What is your role in this production? Hero
2. Is this your first Shakespearean production? This is my first full Shakespearean show- although I was a servant in Taming of The Shrew when I was eight. I don't know if that counts though since I'm not really sure I knew what was going on.
3. What is it that drew you to this production? I've always wanted to do a Shakespeare show. We did lots of Shakespearean scene and monologue work while I was at school at Grant MacEwan, but its really great to be able to play a character for the whole length of the play.
4. What is your favourite thing about the role you play in this current production? It's interesting to play someone who is very much at the mercy of the other characters in the play, and still not play her like a wimp. Since Hero is so silent, a lot of my work is reacting which as been challenging but really rewarding. Also- the costumes are AMAZING. I feel like I'm in my real wedding dress- it's gorgeous!

Spotlight on Rob Johnstone - Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing

1. What is your role in this production? Don Pedro
2. Is this your first Shakespearean production? It's my fourth and the second time round for Much Ado. My first was As You Like It (Sylvius), followed by Much Ado (Benedick) and Midsummer Nights Dream (Oberon). When I came home after auditioning for Dream my youngest son asked me if I got a part and I reported that I had and character was Oberon. He then asked who Oberon was and I replied that he was a king. Wise child that he is then asked "king of what" and when I replied "the faries" he just rolled his eyes and walked away.
3. What is it that drew you to this production? We found Walterdale during the fringe when we went to see Molly Bloom, as we were leaving , after the performance, we saw the past production pictures on the wall and noted that recent productions included Jimmy Dean and Lend me a Tenor shows our Theatre group in Ottawa had done. As we read the plaques and looked around we saw many similarities to our old theatrical home (Kanata Theatre) right down to the friendly English lady (I am assuming Jan Streader, always a phenomenal Walterdale Ambassador) who chatted with us, telling us more about Walterdale, it's history, past productions and perhaps most importantly what the upcoming season was. We were excited to see Rabbit Hole on the season as we had missed a production of it in Ottawa and really wanted to see it. Home we went with brochures for the season and the company in hand. After a several days my wife, Martha, suggested I audition for Much Ado as that might open some doors for involvement in the group. Theatre groups seem like great places to get involved, meet people and find ones feet tin a new city. The fact that the play that was being audioned next was Much Ado was a bonus.
4. What is your favourite thing about being in this production? As Beatrice says when asked what parts she loves of Benedick best "for all of them together" The cast is great, so too the crew, our fearless director and for the opportunity. Thanks Much

We Heartily Agree!

I love it when newspapers and bloggers say nice things about us. Here is the first review for Much Ado About Nothing hot off the presses on the SEE Magazine Blog.

Theatre Review: 'Much Ado About Nothing' Posted by Kristin Rodier in SEEN & HEARD
Director Anne Marie Szucs brings one of Shakespeare’s most loved comedies to life in this current production at the Walterdale theatre. The production is fast-paced, whimsical, facetious, and uproariously funny. The two leads, Murray Cullen (Benedick) and Erika Conway (Beatrice) exactly embody the fickle, nimble, and verbose characters through which Shakespeare wrote some of his best insults and most biting criticisms of the frivolity of love. The set dressings are simple, but the performances are anything but.

This production is glaringly well acted. Often Shakespearean productions leave audiences to think through the dialogue because it is more recited than acted. Such is not the case under Szucs' direction. The actors bring the words to life by thinking through the prose as they fall in love, denounce commitment, hatch plans, and receive scorn. There are so many small details and added directorial touches that bring out so much more of the humour in Shakespeare’s irreverent comedy. This show is beyond an amateur production and is just the thing for cold winter’s night. Four and a half stars out of five.

Much Ado is now playing at the Walterdale until December 11th.

Tonight we add an Audience!

Tonight is the Director's Preview for Shakespeare's delightful Much Ado About Nothing. We add the final and perhaps most important component - the Audience. It is also Student's Night so if you are a high school or university or college student with a valid student ID bring it to Walterdale and see the show for Free. You will play an important role in our process because it is only with an audience that the actors can tell if their rhythms are right. Come to Messina, Italy and the world of Beatrice and Benedick and get out of the cold of the Edmonton winter for a couple of hours!

Simply Magic!

I am always impressed the most by those things that I cannot do myself. Other than a quilt or a button I do not sew. Quilts hide your mistakes and buttons are pretty easy. So, when it comes to costumes I am usually so grateful when someone steps forward to make them. The simplest of costumes impress me. The costumes I saw on the cast of Much Ado About Nothing, however, blow me away! Ephram Di Medicci and his crew of stitchers and sewers have created a fabulous world in fabric. The ladies look stunning, the men handsome, and the upstairs of Walterdale swirls with cream and gold and lace and brocade. This show, with a cast of 19 (some of whom wear more than one costume), has been almost entirely built. All of the women wear custom made corsets. All the of the dress reach to the floor. Everything laces up with gold braid and cream coloured ribbons. The cleavage is bountiful and beautiful. I am truly amazed by all of the costumes and I cannot wait to see them on the set in proper light. It's going to be so pretty!

Much To Do!

This weekend the theatre will be filled with noises as the Dry Tech for Much Ado About Nothing is completed. Q2Q commences in a few short days and then we roll into the final week of rehearsals before opening. So many things were accomplished early because of the hard work and team work on this project. Set, Props and Lighting were all finished well before their deadline. Costumes are being finished up (and looking amazing, I must say!) as I type. All to get ready for that December 1 Opening Night!

We also have a wonderful promotional partnership with Victoria High School who are presenting Two Gentlemen of Verona on Dec 2-4th. For those Shakespeare Fanatics you can take ticket stubs from either show (ours or theirs) to the other and receive a $2 discount at the door. It's a great way to help people to get to more theatre and to celebrate Shakespeare in this chilly winter!

Starting to Think About Next Season Already...

Season Submissions 2011-2012

Every year the call goes out for submissions for the upcoming season. If you are interested in directing a show at Walterdale, please submit at this time. These scripts and additional information will be held in care for the incoming Artistic Director to use to help build their season. All selected Directors will need to be members by the time their audition notice is released. For information on membership, please refer to our website.

What if you haven’t directed much or at all before?
If you are new to directing, please contact Kristen M. Finlay, current Artistic Director, at adwalterdale2009@yahoo.ca to find out how to become an Assistant Director, or direct a One-Act in our From Cradle to Stage One-Act Festival. Please bear in mind that many people do want to direct at Walterdale and experience is a factor in selection.

What kinds of plays are we looking for?
We are looking for a variety of plays. Dramas, comedies, thrillers, classic works, musicals, pantomimes, small cast, large cast, medium cast, period, modern, Canadian, etc… The season has 5 shows plus the one-acts and these shows must meet a variety of needs. We serve a varied audience and a varied membership, so we like to offer up different shows to meet those needs. Feel free to push boundaries and choose edgier works, or pick plays that you connect to. You can submit more than one script. I recommend submitting different kinds of works (varied cast sizes and themes) so that you give the Artistic Director a variety to choose from. Always submit well-written scripts as it is often the writing that rules a script out.

Please submit the following materials:
1. A copy of the script (if you submit the original script, it will be returned to you – photocopies will not be).
2. A copy of your theatre résumé, highlighting your directorial experience both with Walterdale and in other theatrical settings.
3. A Directorial Proposal – including the following:
* Why you think this would be a good show for Walterdale to produce
* Your directorial concept for the show
* Casting requirements
* What Production Team you would bring with you into the project
* ANY information that might affect budget (e.g. Chorus size for a musical or size of ensemble in a straight play, desire for period dress, rental of special equipment).

Scripts and accompanying materials may be dropped off or mailed to:

It's Always Busy at Walterdale

Every week we receive many requests for rental of our space. Invariably the answer is no. We aren't trying to be mean, but what people don't realize is that we are a very busy building. On the surface it doesn't look like it because people outside of Walterdale are only aware of the public performances - our 6 productions, 3 workshops, and 2 major rentals (ADFA and Fringe) - however, in between those events we are busy using the space to prepare for them. The very day after a show closes the next production moves in and the build and rehearsals begin. Because all our members are volunteers many of them also have day jobs or day commitments and this means that rehearsals happen upstairs while the build progresses on deck. Sometimes, if rehearsal schedules are forgiving, two productions can share the space for rehearsals. That's actually happening now with Rabbit Hole rehearsing on Monday and Wednesdays and Much Ado About Nothing rehearsing Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and weekends. Of course, we can use the upstairs as well for rehearsal but at some point the production needs to move to the deck to get familiar with that space. That is actually one of the perks of doing a show at Walterdale - we can build in-house and the production can rehearse on the set for more than just one or two nights. Now, you might think that there would still be some nights for rentals - but because we are relying on volunteers the time it might take to build and paint is approximated and often those dates that look 'free' might be needed if things run behind schedule. Add to that the concerns over having someone in the space with all the props and potential damage to set and props and the time required to make the space rental-ready, it becomes an impossibility. Rest assured, the space is not sitting empty. It may look dark from the outside but inside a crew may be busy at work hammering, or hanging lights or painting. Since the building is older we also need those times in between shows to do maintenance and upgrades. Those first weeks after a close are the best time. This past October we upgraded our dimmer panel - sharing the space with electricians and builders so that the build could still be accomplished on time. A similar maintenance operation will happen after Much Ado closes in December. It's going to get even tighter when the renovations commence. So, if you want to rent the Walterdale - it's an extreme long-shot. Don't feel bad. It's just the nature of how we use the space.

From Cradle to Stage - Selected Scripts!

The two scripts selected from the short-list for development and production are:

Even the Walls Have Eyes by Sherryl Melnyk (paired with Dramaturge Brian Dooley)

Hope is Dead by Mike Czuba (paired with Dramaturge Tracy Carroll)

Congratulations to our 2 selected playwrights for their work. I hope that all of you who submitted this year will submit again in the future as we were very pleased with your work and this was not an easy decision to make. We received over 25 entries and the jury and Dramaturges deliberated for quite some time before making their decisions.

I am looking forward to seeing these works on our stage in May 2011!

Getting Excited About Shakespeare

I sat in on a rehearsal for Much Ado About Nothing last night. I saw about 1/3 of the play. We are 3 1/2 weeks out and it is looking really good. The Set is pretty much done so the cast has the luxury of playing on it for quite a while. It looks lovely. Everyone seemed to know what they were doing - they were having a run for lights. There was the occasional call for line but there are 3 1/2 weeks out - plenty of time! I had a lot of fun watching the cast. Those sitting and watching were supportive and laughing and those onstage were definitely having fun. It will be so cool to see them in their costumes under lights and going for broke!

Much To Do with Much Ado!

Much Ado About Nothing moved into the theatre this week. I am doing Props for the show so I was in for the Production Meeting last night and to start a bit of the props pull. The Cast was treated to their walk-through to familiarize themselves with the space and then some of them had a rehearsal afterwards. I saw some fun character work happening with Assistant Director Monica Roberts and then popped in on a hilarious scene being blocked by Director Anne Marie Szucs.

My props pull was partially successful. I still have quite a few things to find, but I have leads on all of them. Walterdale has a really fun Props room with a lot of things, but sometimes it takes a bit of digging to find what you want. I have also been building at home. I have the bases made for the 16 masks and all I need to do is decorate them and attach the sticks. I can't do the latter until the choreography is set because I don't know what side to put them on. I am also building an Inkhorn and will be working on scrolls and some scabbards for swords. I will be pulling out the glue gun and sparkles so that makes me happy!
I went in this afternoon and met with the Costume Designer Ephram di Medicci and saw his designs and got some fabric scraps to match the masks to. We also sorted out the swords. We decided that we need to check with the Director about which swords to use - we have 4 sabers and 2 pairs of Rapier (both pairs are quite different). Both options require work so the sooner we know which way to go, the better. It's all about communication with everyone involved to make sure the right choice is made. It is better to talk about it first before you spend the time and money to acquire the wrong thing.
I am having fun this season. So far I am involved hands on for the first three shows. I painted on Perfect Pie, now Props for Much Ado and also Directing Rabbit Hole. I am sure there will be some place I can contribute to Threepenny. The One Acts are almost a given with the AD being involved and I am hoping to contribute to set in some way for Village of Idiots (I want to be Master Painter, but it all depends on who the Designer is). One thing I love about Walterdale is that you can certainly learn to do all jobs if you work at it! Since I feel like I know the AD job, it is great to add some other skills to my repertoire!

A Changing of the Guard...

We closed Perfect Pie this weekend. It was truly a lovely show with fine work from all involved. If you missed it - you missed a very fine show, indeed. It was a pretty smooth show with a very strong experienced team helping out first time Walterdale Director Mary Jane Kreisel. Kudos to all involved!

Now the Team for Much Ado About Nothing is moving into the space. George is already working on the set and assembling his build and painting teams. The show is almost completely blocked and the cast will be measured this week for costumes. As Props Person, I have done quite a bit of work on the masks and a bit of the running around to find other things. That will be my focus now.

In a delightful turn of events, the rehearsal schedule for Much Ado About Nothing is almost opposite to the rehearsal schedule for Rabbit Hole, so for a few weeks these two teams will actually share the space. This is a rare event because usually teams find they all want to rehearse the same nights. I know I can truly say that Rabbit Hole feels blessed to get extra time in the space to feel at home. It's nice when we can all play together.

It feels a bit strange for me to realize that I am over halfway through my term as Artistic Director. This was highlighted by the release of the advertisements for the next AD. It went out this morning. I will do my best to answer any questions that interested people have about the position. It is a unique job that I am truly enjoying (99.9 % of the time). Being a AD in a Community Theatre has different challenges than in other settings. Many of these challenges are extremely rewarding, however, if you approach it from the wrong perspective it can make things more difficult. I will say that it is a job that requires almost infinite patience since many of the people doing theatre here at Walterdale do it because they are truly passionate about it and passion can lead to emotional reactions as opposed to rational ones. Again, any questions - ask me. I will do my best to fill you in on what is involved. The advertisement can be found at the Walterdale Playhouse website and on our Fan Page on Facebook. We will also be posting at Theatre Alberta and other theatre related sites.

Opening Night - Happy Birthday to Me!

This season, I decided to give myself an Opening Night and share it with you all. I picked a show that I loved and that I felt showed one of the best that Canada has to offer in terms of playwrights and that I felt that Walterdale could do very, very well. I do not think you will be disappointed. Mary Jane Kreisel and her crack team of Theatre Artists on both sides of the boards have worked incredibly hard and with a phenomenal amount of dedication and passion to bring this piece to life. So, welcome to the 52nd Season at Walterdale and come share a slice of Perfect Pie tonight, or sometime during the run!

Last Rehearsal Before They Come...

As any of you who have done a Walterdale show know, the final dress rehearsal before Director's Preview is accompanied by a big clean of the entire theatre. It's a crazy day and if things are going well with the show (no last minute issues or problems) then usually the Sunday is a day of rest before the onslaught of the 2 week run. Today is that day for Perfect Pie. Right now they are preparing to start the Dress Rehearsal, knowing this is the last chance to iron out any wrinkles before the most important part is added - the audience! From what I saw on Thursday Night, this should be a confirmation run of what they already know... they are ready!

Then they will clean and when the theatre is spotless, they will celebrate with a wee pizza party to toast the achievements of all their hard work!

About Monday, Director's Preview - last season we started Student's Night in conjunction with the Director's Preview. Any student with a valid ID is welcome to attend the show free of charge (subject to availability). We hope to see some Edmonton students out for this fabulous Judith Thompson play!

Another Perfect Moment from Perfect Pie

These are just such beautiful pictures. Thanks Douglas Stewart and the entire Perfect Pie team.

Media Call - Perfect Pie

I had the pleasure of watching the first act of Perfect Pie last night after the media call. It looks so very good. It is hard to believe that they just finished the Q2Q last night and that they have a few more runs until the see an audience on Monday night. They certainly seemed ready for a house full of people. Every detail is crisp and clean and the relationships between the two sets of friends is beautifully established. I stayed for Act One and snuck out at the break between the two acts so that I save something for my Opening Night experience. It's so clean and ready I want to wait to see the finished product!

Thank you , as always, to Douglas Stewart for his fabulous photography. You can check out the pictures here: http://gallery.radgrandpa.com/Event-Photography/Theatre/Perfect-Pie/13982217_GM9oX#1027968460_RoJmg

In a Little Over a Week...

We start the season! Well, the work started a long time ago, but next Wednesday, on October 6th, 2010 we will officially kick off the 52nd Season with the Opening of Perfect Pie. Tonight and tomorrow night, the cast and crew is working on the Q2Q, Wednesday night is media call and a tech run and then a few more runs and a couple of Previews and we are open.

Perfect Pie is a beautifully written piece by Canada's Judith Thompson. It features 4 lovely actresses who have been seen at Walterdale and other place in Edmonton over the years. They have been working hard over the past few months doing the work with each other to play characters at different times of their lives. I hear reports from Production Team members about their strength as individual actors as well as an ensemble. I am so looking forward to seeing them. The set is finished. I was fortunate enough to get to help Joan Hawkins paint it. We had a lot of help on the set, both on the build and the painting. Pierre Valois let the build team and Joan led the painting team, all working hard to bring Alli Ross' beautiful design to life.

All of this has been directed by Mary Jane Kreisel. No stranger to Walterdale, this is MJ's first time directing a Walterdale show. She wisely picked a strong Production Team to work with, and all of them are working hard to help complete her vision for the show. Truly this has been a testament to teamwork at Walterdale.

Reading and Painting...

That's what I am doing this week. I photocopied the 25 scripts received for From Cradle to Stage 2010-2011 today and assembled the packages for the 2 other jury members. I haven't really read any of them yet, so that is what I will start doing this week. One of our jury members is currently in a show, so it will be at least 2 weeks before we meet and make the first decisions (reducing the initial 25 down to 5 scripts to forward to the Dramaturgs). The script length ranged from 5 to 101 pages and they have a variety of cast sizes (as small as 1 and some that offer a variety of cast size depending on doubling). I imagine that there are also a variety of themes and stories. It will be a good week of reading for me.

I am also helping to paint the Perfect Pie set. We have had quite a few people come through with this job. We are led by the Master-Painter Joan Hawkins and it is coming along beautifully. I will be there for a few hours tomorrow afternoon!

It's Official!

Yesterday was the 2010 AGM for Walterdale Theatre Associates. The business portion was amazingly quick. We started it at about 6:15 p.m. and finished it by 6:35 p.m. I like to think that it went so fast because people are happy with how things are going. I could be wrong, but the atmosphere was very positive, so I am going to run with that! Then we took a short break and had the fun portion of the evening where we presented awards, both fun and official. Congratulations to Viven Bosley who received the Jack Wilson Award for her Life time contributions to Walterdale. Vivien was presented the award by last year's recipient Pat Eyford and Vivien's speech upon receiving it was both funny and inspiring. Congratulations also to Joan Hawkins, painter extraordinaire, who received the Season's Outstanding Contribution Award for her amazing work this past season. We are truly blessed to have people in our membership like Vivien and Joan. We can all learn from them!

Auditions for Much Ado About Nothing

We are halfway through auditions for Much Ado About Nothing. Last night was so much fun and it was terrific to see and hear so many good actors. Usually I am a little scared at auditions for Shakespeare. It's great when it goes well but it can be a train wreck when it goes wrong, but there were so many strong people and everyone was definitely bringing their A-Game! We are back tonight for the second round and I am definitely looking forward to it!

Perfect Pie

Our first show up on deck this season is Perfect Pie, by renowned Canadian playwright Judith Thompson. For more information on Thompson you can start with this:

Perfect Pie tells the story of the childhoods of Patsy and Marie and the impact it had on their later lives. It is told in flashbacks as the adult Patsy and Marie (now Francesca) meet after many years to revisit their past and the event that led to their separation. The four characters onstage are amazing opportunities for any actress and the themes of changing friendships and survival are universal that are sure to appeal to a variety of audience members.

We hope you get a chance to check this work out on our stage.

And So Fringe 2010 Ends...

Thanks to all the performers and audiences who visited our building this year. I saw several shows in the space and was impressed by how you all used and played in it (Bash'd, This Lime Tree Bower, Social Sundays, Spin, and Night Sweats). There were a couple I didn't get to, but I am sure it all went well. Thank you to the wonderful Technicians who took care of the building (including dealing with a flood) and to the Front of House staff that welcomed all the visitors. We hope that many of you might return to Walterdale for a show or two this season!

Can't Wait to See the Shows!

Fringe is here! I hope to get to 3 shows tonight to kick off the Festival. So far I have 28 shows scheduled (I am waiting to buy tickets because I am coordinating with friends on a few shows). I also have 2 1/2 unscheduled days that I can fill as I choose. It is expensive, but it is technically my 'holiday' this year and it will be far less expensive than the 2 trips I took to Minnesota last summer! I will also get to see so much THEATRE! Yay! I do confess, I avoid the stand-up routines and I do focus on the shows from local performers, particularly those I know, but I have squeezed in a few interesting choices that are from far and wide merely because they intrigued me in their descriptions. I know that there are hits and misses, but I have rarely gone to a Fringe show where there wasn't something I liked/learned from the production (even that Tap Dance show a few years back...).

Anyhow, here goes... You show me yours!

Anxiously Awaiting...

I deliberately chose to do nothing for Fringe this year so that I could actually go and see some shows. I am so excited for all those artists who are taking risks on the Fringe stages to produce new works and test drive their skills in the 38 stage festival. Please take some time to check out those shows that have a Walterdale connection. I have highlighted as many as I could find in this blog. If you have a show and a Walterdale connection and you don't see yours here, let me know and I will do a write up for you! I am excited to see how those skills we have seen at Walterdale have translated to the Fringe!
