Port Authority and Or - Put these Walterdale Member's Shows on your Fringe Radar!

Every year, Walterdale is pleased to support it's members in their pursuits of artistic excellence at the Edmonton International Fringe Festival.  One of the ways we do this is sharing the news of their shows via this blog and in our newsletter.

Here are two shows being presented by Forces of Chaos and Trunk Theatre which you might be interested in catching.

Forces of Chaos presents the Canadian premiere of Conor McPherson’s Port Authority at the 2013 Edmonton International Fringe Festival from August 16th-24th, 2013.  A young man moves in with the girl her secretly loves, another man is hired for a job for which he is vastly under qualified and a pensioner receives a mysterious package in the mail.   The production is directed by Amy DeFelice (Swimming with Goldfish - Walterdale; Mojo Mickeybo - Fringe 2012) and stars Isaac Andrew (Take A Bite), Kieran O’Callaghan (The Weir, Lion in Winter - Walterdale; Four in the Crib - Fringe 2012) and Cody Porter (The Weir, Antony & Cleopatra, You are Here - Walterdale; Days of Wine and Roses - Trunk Theatre).  Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote “I found myself holding on to what these actors had to say like I was a 5-year old at bedtime being introduced to “The Arabian Nights.”  This play is presented by the Sterling nominated company that presented McPherson’s This Lime Tree Bower at the 2010 Fringe Festival.

In addition, Forces of Chaos is selling $ 10.00 buttons, as sign of membership to their (Sup)Port Authority fan club,  as part of their campaign to raise awareness about their production.  The buttons entitled the wearer to discounts at local merchants and the production.

Port Authority plays at Venue #8: Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre (8426 Gateway Boulevard).  Tickets are available online (fta@fringetheatre.ca), by phone 780-409-1910, or at the onsite box offices.

And there is Or...

Trunk Theatre presents the Alberta premiere of Liz Duffy Adams’ literary sex farce Or, at the 2013 Edmonton International Fringe Festival.  The play takes place during a tumultuous night in the life of Aphra Behn, poet, spy, and the first professional female playwright.   Aphra tries to finish her new play by its morning deadline between interruptions from her sudden new love, actress Nell Gwynne; her complicated royal love, King Charles II; and her dangerous ex-love, double agent William Scot.  Against a backdrop of a long-drawn out war and a counter-culture of free love, cross-dressing and youthful rebellion, 1669 looks a lot like 1969.

Or, is directed by Amy DeFelice (Mojo Mickybo; Swimming with Goldfish - Walterdale) and stars Clarice Eckford (Doubt), Kristi Gunther-Hansen (Pith!) and Garett Ross (Jack Goes Boating).  The show plays at Stage 8: Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre (8426 Gateway Boulevard).  Trunk Theatre’s previous Fringe productions include the Sterling nominated Dying City, Ashes to Ashes, A Kind of Alaska and Emphysema: A Love Story.   Or, premiered Off-Broadway in 2009.   Liz Duffy Adams has an MFA in Playwriting from Yale and is the winner of the Lillian Hellman Award for Playwriting.

From Cradle to Stage - 2014

Walterdale Theatre “From Cradle to Stage”
2013-2014 New Work Competition
Edmonton’s foremost community theatre company is now accepting submissions for its annual new work event, “From Cradle to Stage”.  For over 10 years, Walterdale Theatre has been producing original plays by local playwrights as a part of its main stage season.  Plays are selected by jury, and selected playwrights will receive dramaturgy to help them in the development of their play.
 Timeline:
·         Deadline for all submissions is Sunday, September 15th, 2013.
·         Playwrights will have the opportunity to work with a dramaturge to develop their scripts in late 2013 and early 2014.
·         Finished scripts will be paired up with directors and production teams by January 2014.
·         The selected plays will be produced May 12-17, 2014.
Submission Guidelines:
·         Scripts must be unproduced and unpublished prior to the Walterdale production dates.  If your script has had a public reading or has been work-shopped, please include its development history up to this point.
·         Scripts must be typed or printed, with spaces between all speaking parts.  Include your name and contact info on the first page of the script, and number your pages.
·         Along with the script, please include a brief bio (50 words or less in the 3rd person) which Walterdale will use for publicity purposes if your play is chosen.

·         Scripts should run approximately 60-120 minutes.  Although we recognize that running times may change during play development, Walterdale reserves the right to edit script to accommodate time requirements.
·         For the purpose of this competition, “local” indicates a resident of the Edmonton Area.  This includes satellite communities such as Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Sherwood Park, St. Albert and Leduc.  If you are unsure if you geographically qualify to submit, please do not hesitate to inquire via email.

All submissions must be received in a hard-copy format by midnight September 15, 2013.  Do not submit your original copy.  If you want your script returned to you, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  Unselected scripts without a SASE will be recycled.  Scripts can be mailed to:

Meet Andrea Newman, Ensemble Member in Anything Goes! Now on stage at Walterdale!

What is your role in this Production?
I'm part of the ensemble for this production, so I do a little dancing, a little acting and a lot of singing. I appear as a reporter in an opening scene, but for most of the show I play a very bored passenger. I named her Maureen. Maureen is married to Seamus, one of the sailors on board. Her main reason for embarking on this voyage, however, is not to spend more time with her husband, but to rub elbows with the rich and famous. Big liners like this are a draw for celebrities and Maureen is very much hoping to meet (and possibly be swept off her feet by) a huge star. After all, it's a boat, there are only so many places that one can hide...
What brought you out for this production?I took a few classes at the Foote Theatre School at the Citadel this past year and Barb Mah, the director, was one of my instructors. I had a great time in that class and I thought it would be really fun to work with Barb again, especially on a musical by Cole Porter, whom I love. Plus, TAP DANCING. Sold.

What is your background in theatre?
I started dancing when I was 7, so being onstage is nothing new for me. I loved dancing onstage, so theatre was kind of a natural segue. I did a few plays in elementary school and junior high, but I didn't really get into theatre until high school. I did my BA in Drama at the U of A, but I worked behind the scenes hanging lights/building sets and being set designer/stage carpenter/runner/stage manager etc. on most of the productions that I did, so it's nice to be back in a performing role. This is the first show I've ever done with the Walterdale, but hopefully it won't be the last!

Biggest Challenge? The comedy of the show, in general. In the past I have mostly been cast in dramatic roles - and non-musical ones, at that, save one - so to do a flashy, funny, over the top musical like this one is a really big switch. But despite the big change, it has been tons of fun and I have learned an awful lot.

This play takes place on a ship, you have any good boating stories? My brother and I spent a lot of time in my dad's boat when we were little, "fishing" off the side with long sticks. However, that boat has been docked in the backyard since about 1983, so that probably doesn't count. When I was a kid and a teenager my family spent some time in New Zealand and had a few opportunities to go out on the water in a friend's boat, in the bays around Kaiteriteri. New Zealand is a really breathtakingly beautiful country and sailing along the coastline is pretty amazing. The water itself is also unbelievably clear and gorgeously blue-green, it was a pretty awesome experience. Plus, for a very long period of time when I was younger I wanted nothing more than to be a Mountie, so I had the time of my life hanging over the side and pretending that I was on a very important police boat mission. In the Spirit of "Anything Goes" how true is that about you? In most aspects of my life, it's very, very true. When I was a kid I never ever turned down a dare, which resulted in me doing things like eating cookies soaked in ranch dressing and stepping on the tines of an upturned rake to see if it would actually come up to smack me in the face. (It did indeed.) Let's just say that being willing to do or say basically anything has sometimes gotten me into a lot of trouble....

This adaptation restores the suspense and seduction of Bram Stoker’s classic novel to the stage.
